IN FRONT OF JULIA'S MOTHER'S HOUSE
NARRATOR:
Harry Walkott is trying to get out of time. And that's because time is holding him prisoner. One thing Harry is sure of, only his girlfriend Julia can possibly be behind this all. So he's looking for her, and the first place he looks is in the bosom of her family. I didn't know that Julia came from Stuttgart. You can normally hear it when someone comes from Swabia – Schwaben.
HARRY:
Schwaben? What's that?
NARRATOR:
That's the name of the region, and the Swabians are a part of the population in the state of Baden-Württemberg, in southern Germany. They speak their own dialect – Schwäbisch.
HARRY:
That's very interesting. As far as I know, Julia grew up in Hamburg, in the north.
JULIA'S MOTHER:
Harry! Ihr seid schon da? Was für eine Überraschung!
NARRATOR:
Is that Julia's mother?
HARRY:
Yes. Where else should I have gone to find her?
JULIA'S MOTHER:
Kommt doch rein, Kinder! Wo ist denn Julia?
HARRY:
That just what I want to know from you: where Julia is. Ist sie nicht hier?
JULIA'S MOTHER:
Nein. Ich habe eigentlich erst Ende der Woche mit euch gerechnet.
NARRATOR:
She expected you only at the weekend.
HARRY:
Wir treffen uns hier. The best thing is for me to pretend we had arranged to meet here. Wir sind hier verabredet.
JULIA'S MOTHER:
Aha! Komm rein. Ich habe gerade Kaffeekränzchen mit meinen Freundinnen.
NARRATOR:
Kaffeekränzchen! How sweet! That's something typically German. The women sit together, drink coffee and gossip until the cows come home.
HARRY:
Oh dear, not that too.
IN MOTHER'S LIVING ROOM
JULIA'S MOTHER:
Meine Damen, darf ich vorstellen? Das ist Harry Walkott.
HARRY:
Guten Tag!
JULIA'S MOTHER:
Der Lebensgefährte meiner Tochter Julia.
FRIEND 1:
Ach, was für eine Überraschung!
FRIEND 3:
Oh ja, was für eine Überraschung!
FRIEND 1:
Schön, Sie kennen zu lernen.
HARRY:
Freut mich auch.
FRIEND 2:
Machen Sie Urlaub in Deutschland?
HARRY:
Holiday? Ja, ja, ich mache Urlaub.
FRIEND 1:
Und wie gefällt es Ihnen hier?
FRIEND 3:
Ja, wie gefällt Ihnen Deutschland denn so?
HARRY:
How I like it? It's good. Es gefällt mir wirklich gut.
NARRATOR:
Oh come on? You really like it?
FRIEND 2:
Schön, schön.
FRIEND 1:
Wo waren Sie denn schon?
HARRY:
Nur im Schwarzwald.
FRIEND 1:
Ach, der Schwarzwald, der ist wunderschön, nicht wahr?
FRIENDS 2 AND 3:
Oh ja, der Schwarzwald, der ist wunderschön. Kuckucksuhr. Oh ja.
FRIEND 2:
Aber Sie müssen unbedingt auch die Wartburg in Eisenach besuchen!
FRIEND 3:
Ja!
FRIEND 2:
Sie müssen die Wartburg besuchen!
FRIEND 3:
Stimmt!
FRIENDS:
Und den Rhein, den Rhein!
HARRY:
Entschuldigung, ich verstehe Sie nicht.
NARRATOR:
She thinks you really ought to see the Wartburg, a famous castle. The founder of the
protestant church, Martin Luther, hid there at the beginning of the sixteenth century. And there he translated the bible for the very first time into German.
FRIEND 1:
Und den Rhein! Den Rhein muss er sehen, und die berühmte Loreley, die ist so
romantisch.
FRIENDS:
Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten, dass ich so traurig bin …
NARRATOR:
Die Loreley is a rock on the Rhine river. According to the legend, a long haired maiden called Loreley sat on the rock and tempted the boatmen on the Rhine with her beautiful voice, so that boats were wrecked on the rocks. Heinrich Heine, a famous writer, wrote a poem about it in 1824.
HARRY:
Goodness, where on earth have I landed?
FRIEND 1:
Welchen Kuchen möchten Sie, Herr Walkott?
HARRY:
Which cake?
FRIEND 3:
Hmm, der Apfelkuchen ist so toll!
FRIEND 2:
Den Apfelkuchen, nehmen Sie den Apfelkuchen. Der ist lecker!
FRIEND 3:
Lecker, lecker!
FRIEND 1:
Köstlich! Köstlich!
HARRY:
Ähm, ich nehme den Apfelkuchen, der sieht gut aus.
JULIA'S MOTHER:
Möchtest du einen Kaffee, Harry?
HARRY:
Oh ja, ich nehme gerne einen Kaffee, danke! Coffee is just what I need right now.
JULIA'S MOTHER:
Warte, ich hole dir einen frischen aus der Küche.
HARRY:
Oh, I'll come with you! Ich komme mit.
NARRATOR:
Harry, behave yourself. The ladies are talking to you. You can’t just go now! Make your excuses politely at least.
HARRY:
Okay. Entschuldigen Sie mich, bitte. Ich komme gleich wieder.
FRIEND 1:
Kein Problem, Herr Walkott!
FRIEND 2:
Ein netter junger Mann, nicht wahr?
FRIEND 1:
Sehr nett.
FRIEND 2:
Nach Dresden müssen die beiden eigentlich auch noch fahren. Das ist eine schöne Stadt.
FRIEND 1:
Ach ja, unser Elbflorenz …
IN THE MOTHER'S KITCHEN
NARRATOR:
Julia isn't here Harry. Do you want to do the washing up?
HARRY:
Rubbish! But perhaps her mother knows where she is. I'll listen carefully and discreetly to what she has to say. Kann ich helfen?
NARRATOR:
I can't believe it. Harry Walkott wants to help Julia's mummy with making the coffee.
JULIA'S MOTHER:
Vielen Dank, Harry, das ist nicht nötig. Der Kaffee ist gleich fertig.
HARRY:
Okay.
WEATHER FORECASTER:

JULIA'S MOTHER:

WEATHER FORECASTER:

JULIA'S MOTHER:

WEATHER FORECASTER:

JULIA'S MOTHER:
Hör mal!
WEATHER FORECASTER:

JULIA'S MOTHER:
Schnee in Hamburg?
WEATHER FORECASTER:
Momentan sieht es so aus, als ob der Wintereinbruch in der Hansestadt noch eine Weile anhalten wird.
JULIA'S MOTHER:
Also, das Wetter macht, was es will.
HARRY:
Verrückt!
NARRATOR:
That's really crazy. Thirty degrees in the Black Forest and snow – Schnee – in Hamburg.
HARRY:
Schnee? Didn't Julia say that it was snowing where she was? And that hooting in the background – that could have been a ship!
NARRATOR:
You're right!
HARRY:
That must mean: Julia is in Hamburg.
