IN HELEN'S FLAT

NARRATOR:
After a marvelous meal with Helen, Harry seems to be feeling good for the first time in ages.

HARRY:
Helen, vielen Dank! Heute ist ein schöner Tag.

HELEN:
Obwohl wir tot sind. Der Rotwein ist wirklich lecker!

HARRY:
Sehr lecker! Es geht uns gut, sehr gut.

HELEN:
Uns geht es saugut

HARRY:
What's going on out there?

HELEN:
Ach, das ist nur diese Demo.

HARRY:
Demo?

HELEN:

HARRY:
Okay.

ON HELEN'S BALCONY

HELEN:
Kannst du die Transparente lesen? Ich habe meine Brille nicht auf.

HARRY:
Transparente? Oh, the signs. I can read them, but I don't understand them. 'Stoppt das Experiment!'

NARRATOR:
The people are demonstrating against some experiment: gegen etwas demonstrieren.

HARRY:
Why are they on a demonstration against an experiment?

HELEN:

Niemand!

NARRATOR:
Listen to her, the demonstrator says that after the experiment there might be no-one left.

HELEN:
Puh, die Demonstrantin macht einem richtig Angst.

NARRATOR:
That's right, she's really scary.

HARRY:
Helen, that's got nothing to do with people like us who are in a time warp. Das ist nicht unser Problem.

DEMONSTRATOR:
Mit der Zeit spielt man nicht!

HELEN:
Warte mal!

DEMONSTRATOR:

HELEN:
Was redet sie da? Man darf nicht die Zeit manipulieren?

HARRY:
Manipulating time? Helen, that could mean the experiment is responsible for the time warp!

HELEN:
Das Experiment ist schuld an der Zeitschleife?

HARRY:
Ja! We need more information. Wir brauchen mehr Informationen!

NARRATOR:
Ask the demonstrator!

HARRY:
Ja! Good idea!

HELEN:
Harry, wohin …?

HARRY:
Ich gehe raus und frage die Demonstrantin.

HELEN:
Na dann, geh nur! Ich muss sowieso noch arbeiten! Viel Glück!

HARRY:
Bis bald, Helen. Und vielen Dank für das Essen. Es war sehr lecker!

IN THE STREET / AT THE DEMONSTRATION

HARRY:
What a crowd! Entschuldigung, darf ich durch? Danke! I've got to get through here. Hallo! Entschuldigung, darf ich durch?

DEMONSTRATOR:
Wir demonstrieren gegen das Experiment! Wir engagieren uns für die Natur!

NARRATOR:
This is getting better all the time: demonstrieren gegen - sich engagieren für. They're not just demonstrating against the experiment, they're also standing up for nature.

HARRY:
Excuse me. Hallo! Entschuldigung …

DEMONSTRATOR:

NARRATOR:
The demonstrator has come here so that the world will have a future. Harry is here so that he can find out more about the experiment. damit - so that - is a conjunction which indicates purpose. The verb goes to the end of the clause.

HARRY:
Hallo!

NARRATOR:
um eine Katastrophe zu verhindern - to prevent a catastrophe. The conjunction um … zu also indicates a purpose. The verb also goes at the end of the clause, but it's in the infinitive: Harry muss zuhören, um Deutsch zu lernen.

HARRY:
Wonderful! But I really don't have time for your lectures right now. I've got to get on and do something: Stopp! Stopp! Ich muss mit Ihnen reden!

DEMONSTRATOR:
Was wollen Sie denn?

HARRY:
Warum demonstrieren Sie gegen das Experiment?

DEMONSTRATOR:

HARRY:
Of course I read the paper, every morning! Aber ich kann nicht gut Deutsch. Ich komme aus Traponia.

DEMONSTRATOR:
Ich liebe Traponia! I was an exchange student at the University of Traponia.

HARRY:
How lovely!

DEMONSTRATOR:
I don't believe it!

HARRY:
A voice from my homeland!

NARRATOR:
Phew, that means I can rest a bit!

HARRY:
My name is Harry, Harry Walkott. What's yours?

DEMONSTRATOR:
Ich bin Jenny! Listen, Harry - I'll let you know what's going on.

HARRY:
Ja bitte!

DEMONSTRATOR:
Also, das Max-Planck-Institut in München will ein schwarzes Loch herstellen.

HARRY:
Stop, stop. Just help me out here a bit. What is ein schwarzes Loch?

DEMONSTRATOR:
Oh, sorry. A research center in Munich wants to create a black hole, a sort of artificial
mini-hole, which will bend time and swallow material. Do you understand? Wenn das
Experiment außer Kontrolle gerät … I mean, if the experiment gets out of control, Harry, time will be all over the place.

HARRY:
But time is already all over the place!

DEMONSTRATOR:
Heute Nacht, tonight, shortly before midnight, is when the experiment is supposed to
begin.

HARRY:
That's exactly the time at which I was thrown into a time warp.

DEMONSTRATOR:
Zeitschleife?

HARRY:
Listen! The experiment must not be allowed to take place. It's caused a time warp, it's bent time. You've got to stop it.

DEMONSTRATOR:
Harry, wir demonstrieren gegen das Experiment. But the courts have already allowed it.

HARRY:
There's always a way. One could sabotage the experiment.

DEMONSTRATOR:
Sabotieren? Aber das ist nicht so einfach. Moment! Ich habe eine Idee! Hier, nimm diese Visitenkarte! This business card is from Tom Fauser. He is our best environmental activist.

HARRY:
'Tom Fauser, Umweltschützer, Friedrichstraße 23, 10115 Berlin'

DEMONSTRATOR:

HARRY:
An action to oppose the experiment?

DEMONSTRATOR:
Ja! He's looking for people to work with him, so get in touch. As soon as possible! So schnell wie möglich!

HARRY:
Danke, das mache ich sofort, Jenny!

DEMONSTRATOR:
Ja, do it at once!

HARRY:
Thanks a lot - you've saved my life!
