ON THE STAIRCASE IN THE SHARED HOUSE

NARRATOR:
Harry has learned that the Max Planck Institute in Munich plans to carry out an experiment which, if it goes wrong, could change the way time works. Harry arrived in Berlin on the InterCity train. He has seldom seemed so decisive and full of determination and energy.

HARRY:
Are you surprised? At last I've found the reason for the time warp. And for the first time, I have a real chance of being able to leave it.

NARRATOR:
I can't wait to find out what this environmental activist has planned to stop this experiment!

HARRY:
The main thing is that this Tom Fauser should be home.

BESSAT:
Hi.

HARRY:
Guten Tag! Mein Name ist Harry, Harry Walkott.

BESSAT:
Ich bin Bessat. Komm rein.

HARRY:
Ich möchte gerne mit Tom Fauser sprechen.

BESSAT:
Tom ist einkaufen. Komm rein! Ich kann dir auch alles zeigen.

HARRY:
Zeigen? What does he want to show me?

BESSAT:

HARRY:
Können Sie bitte langsam sprechen?

BESSAT:
Ach so, entschuldige. Komm mit! Also, hier ist die Küche. Das ist der Kühlschrank. Das ist das Bier.

HARRY:
Bier? Ja.

BESSAT:
Möchtest du ein Bier?

Harry:
Klar, gerne!

BESSAT:
Prost!

HARRY:
Prost!

NARRATOR:
Harry! … I can’t believe it!

HARRY:
It’s just a beer!

BESSAT:
Komm, weiter! Hier ist unser Wohnzimmer. Das ist das größte Zimmer. Hier gucken wir meistens Fernsehen.

HARRY:
Ja, dieses Wohnzimmer ist sehr schön! Why on earth is he showing me the living room?

NARRATOR:
I think there must be a misunderstanding!

BESSAT:
So, komm!

HARRY:
How many people live here then?

NARRATOR:
Oh, Harry, this is a WG - a Wohngemeinschaft - in a shared house, don't panic.
It's usually young people who live together and share the rent. Everyone has his own room and they share the kitchen, living room and bathroom.

BESSAT:

HARRY:
Am I dreaming or is there really a naked woman lying in the bathtub?

NARRATOR:
Eine nackte Frau in der Badewanne! Are you sure you don't want to move in, Harry?

EVA:

HARRY:
Eva, freut mich. Ich bin Harry, Harry Walkott. T - E - O - W - A - K - T, Walkott?

NARRATOR:
Harry, don't make yourself a laughing stock. Haven't you ever seen a naked woman before?

HARRY:
Well, yes, but never quite so, so suddenly!

EVA:
Willkommen in unserer WG, Harry!

HARRY:
Welcome? Ah, they really think I want to rent a room?

NARRATOR:
mieten, to rent is mieten, Harry.

BESSAT:
So, komm mit! Harry! Ich zeige dir jetzt dein Zimmer. Na, gefällt's dir? Und? Hast du Lust, hier zu wohnen?

HARRY:
Das Zimmer ist schön. But I don't want to rent it.

NARRATOR:
When you have two verbs in a sentence, the second one is very often at the end of the sentence in the infinitive with zu.

HARRY:
Okay, okay, okay!

HARRY:
22 square meters? What's he on about?

NARRATOR:
The room costs only 180 Euros, but ...

HARRY:
But I'm not interested.

BESSAT:
Warum? Hast du was gegen mich? Oder gegen Eva?

HARRY:
Have I got anything against him or Eva? No. Nein, überhaupt nicht. Ihr seid sehr nett.

BESSAT:
Na, dann ist doch alles klar. Ich erkläre dir jetzt unsere Regeln. Wir haben einen Putzplan. Wir teilen uns die Hausarbeit fair auf.

NARRATOR:
They have a rota for cleaning, and they share their housework fairly between them.

HARRY:
Hausarbeit? No, thanks!

BESSAT:

HARRY:
Putzen? On Friday the poor guy has to clean the bathroom? Certainly no job for me.

BESSAT:

NARRATOR:
On Monday Eva has to mop the floor.

BESSAT:

NARRATOR:
Today it's Tom's turn to do the dishes.

BESSAT:

NARRATOR:
Tom is supposed to vacuum and bring down the garbage. Eine gut organisierte WG! Don't you think so?

HARRY:
Yes, I'd feel thoroughly at home here. But my dear, I'm in a time warp and I wake up every day in a hotel in the Black Forest!

BESSAT:
Ah, da ist er ja!

TOM FAUSER:
Hi, Bessat.

BESSAT:
Hi, Tom.

TOM FAUSER

NARRATOR:
Tom has more important things to deal with than cleaning the flat!

BESSAT:

NARRATOR:
Things like the death of the forest or world peace.

HARRY:
Tom? Du bist Tom?

TOM FAUSER:
Ja, ich bin Tom. Hi!

HARRY:
Ich bin Harry. Ich will helfen, das Experiment zu stoppen.

TOM FAUSER:
Hey, geil! Du willst helfen?

BESSAT:
Wie bitte?

TOM FAUSER:
Ja klar, Mann!

BESSAT:
Du willst gar nicht bei uns wohnen?

HARRY:
Ich kann nicht hier wohnen, leider. I've got to stop the experiment which has caused the time warp. First things first! Tut mir leid.
