Adverbs that express intensity
Certain adverbs or adverbial phrases consisting of several words can be used to intensify or modify the meaning of an adjective or a verb.
Intensity of the adverbs of degree:
with negation:
There is hardly any difference between nicht sehr, nicht besonders and nicht so. Intonation and gesture here will often say more than the words themselves.
These adverbs of degree are frequently combined with adjectives.
besonders:
Die Schiffsfahrt zum Binger Mäuseturm war besonders schön.
sehr:
Die Stadtführung war sehr interessant.
ziemlich:
Das Wetter war ziemlich schlecht.
etwas/ein bisschen:
Am Anfang war der Ausflug etwas langweilig.
Etwas or ein bisschen are combined only with adjectives with a negative meaning. Sometimes zu is also used as a supplement:
Die Leute in der Gruppe waren mir ein bisschen zu alt.
These adverbial phrases are often used to negate adjectives:
nicht sehr/nicht besonders:
Die anderen Leute in der Gruppe waren nicht sehr interessant.
nicht so:
Das Essen war nicht so gut.
gar nicht:
Gespräche über Krankheiten finde ich gar nicht angenehm.
