There is a wide variety of cultural events and activities in Germany, ranging from theater performances and concerts, to film festivals, exhibitions, readings, and smaller-scale performing arts and cabaret. Many cultural venues are subsidized with public funds from a municipality or state. This is called Kulturförderung – funding of the arts. Venues or individuals can apply for awards or scholarships. There is also private funding, such as through foundations, patrons, or sponsors.

Some of the most important cultural events in Germany include the Berlinale – the international film festival in Berlin in February – and for opera fans, the Richard-Wagner-Festspielen in Bayreuth in summer. Every five years, documenta takes places in Kassel. It is the world's biggest and most important exhibition of modern art. There are also many open air festivals in the summer in a wide range of cultural areas.

The cultural events are quite diverse, and even in smaller towns or cities, you'll find readings in public libraries or festivals. Find out what exciting things are happening in your area!
