Spring, summer, fall and winter – the four seasons in Germany have very different weather. That means you need various types of clothing to stay warm and not get sick.

Summer is the warmest time of year, with an average temperature of over 20°C. People wear lightweight clothing like t-shirts, light pants, skirts and dresses, and airy shoes or sandals.

In the winter, the average temperature is often around freezing point. Indoors everywhere is heated, but outside, you need warm sweaters, a heavy jacket, a scarf, hat, and gloves. Undershirts, thick socks and boots are also useful.

Spring and fall are transitional seasons in which it can be warm during the day and cold at night.

Fashion trends change often. If you want to keep your costs down when shopping, keep an eye out for bargains or special offers. You'll find sales and discounted items at the end of the seasons – end of July and end of January – when new season stock arrives in the stores.
