Admittedly, Harry has difficulty describing to Mr. Strobel the woman who sent him a mysterious message. Perhaps it's not just Harry's knowledge of German but also the woman's inconspicuous clothing? Of course, when we think of fashion from Germany, we tend to think of practical clothing rather than extravagant fashion design. Weatherproof jackets are popular, based on the notion, "There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes." However, some internationally renowned fashion designers do come from Germany – including Karl Lagerfeld, Jil Sander and Wolfgang Joop.
But very few people can afford designer fashion. Fast fashion – trendy clothing at affordable prices – is also popular in Germany. On average, German consumers buy 60 items of clothing every year. Many of them are never or rarely worn and end up in the garbage. This has consequences for people and the environment. But initiatives have been started to address this situation. In Germany, more and more sustainable fashion is being produced and sold. People also like to buy secondhand clothing or exchange clothing. That way, they don't have to buy a newly produced garment every time they want to try out different styles.
