Interesting facts about the Black Forest

Harry complains about the Black Forest all the time. If he took a closer look at the area, he would quickly change his mind. The entire area (about 7,500 km²) is a nature reserve with special areas designed to protect rare plants and animals. As a final point, because of the unique natural landscape and the numerous winter sports facilities, tourism is now the most important economic factor in the region. One of the most popular destinations, for example, is the Feldberg. At 1,493 meters (4,900 feet), it is the highest mountain in the Black Forest.

But the Black Forest has become world famous for the cuckoo clock. In the snowy, cold winter of 1735, farmer Franz Ketterer built a special clock from which a little bird sang "cuckoo" every hour. Over time, the cuckoo clock found fans over the world. Hand-carved versions can cost several thousand euros. The largest handmade cuckoo clock in the world is located in the town of Triberg in the Black Forest and is mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records.
