The subjunctive is a verb form we can use to express wishes or desires. But it can also be used to formulate questions or requests politely. In this case we often use the modal verb können. Requests with können are usually yes-no questions:
Könnte ich bitte mit Herrn Thoma sprechen?
Könnten Sie Herrn Thoma bitte etwas ausrichten?
Useful questions that you can use in everyday situations are, for example:
Könnten Sie bitte etwas lauter/langsamer sprechen?
Könnten Sie das bitte wiederholen?
Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?
