Harry is surprised when the taxi driver runs over a penguin in the Black Forest. Are there really penguins in southwestern Germany? Not outside captivity there aren't. But there are many other types of wildlife here. More than 250 nature reserves provide them with a suitable habitat. The two biggest are the Feldberg nature reserve, which was established in 1937, and Belchen, which was declared a nature reserve in 1949.

Nature's beauty draws many tourists, hikers and outdoor winter sports enthusiasts. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, over 1 million visitors came each year. Tourism is a significant economic factor for the region, but it's not always compatible with nature conservation. There are fewer and fewer retreats for very shy animals, like the wood grouse and lynx. This poses a dilemma for the people of the Black Forest, who want to live off tourism and at the same time preserve nature.
