IN FRONT OF THE KÖLSCH PUB AT THE RAILWAY STATION

NARRATOR:
It is just before midday at the Cologne railway station. Harry and Helen are in the mood to celebrate, since their plan seems to be working. "Professor" Harry Walkott, the supposed scientist from Traponia, will be allowed to attend the experiment in Munich this evening.

HARRY:
Helen, der Zug nach München fährt erst in 30 Minuten.

HELEN:
Echt? Erst in einer halben Stunde?

HARRY:
We've got plenty of time. Was machen wir?

HELEN:
Hast du Lust auf ein Bier?

HARRY:
I'm always keen on a beer. Gute Idee!

IN THE KÖLSCH PUB AT THE STATION

NARRATOR:
Harry, don't let the beer make you forget the time! The train leaves in half an hour.

HARRY:
Okay, okay, you're just like Julia. It's just a beer!

HELEN:
Und? Wie wirst du das Experiment stoppen?

NARRATOR:
Harry is just going to pull the plug out of the socket.

HARRY:
Ja, ich werde einfach den Stecker aus der Steckdose ziehen.

HELEN:
Genial! Einfach und genial!

HARRY:
Ich freue mich. To a normal life.

HELEN:
Du freust dich auf ein normales Leben?

NARRATOR:

HARRY:

WAITER: (DIALECT)
Hallo, ihr zwei Hübschen. Was soll es sein?

HARRY:
Ein schönes, kaltes, deutsches Bier.

WAITER: (DIALECT)
Du bist gut. Deutsche Biere gibt es viele. Es gibt Pils, Weißbier, Alt, Kölsch, helles Bier, dunkles Bier vom Fass oder aus der Flasche.

HARRY:
Oh, bitte langsamer!

WAITER: (DIALECT)
Es gibt Pils, Weißbier, Kölsch, Alt, helles Bier …

HARRY:
What?

WAITER:
… dunkles Bier vom Fass oder aus der Flasche.

HARRY:
I didn't even know there were so many kinds of beer.

WAITER: (DIALECT)
Ja, hier in Köln trinkt man Kölsch!

HELEN:
Sie haben recht. Wir sind in Köln, und deshalb nehmen wir zwei Kölsch bitte.

WAITER:
Ja.

HARRY:
What's a Kölsch?

NARRATOR:
That's a wonderful example of local pride - a beer which tastes of nothing and is served in glasses which are far too small, but the people of Cologne love it.

HELEN:
Das Lieblingsbier der Deutschen ist allerdings das Pils, obwohl ich es überhaupt nicht mag.

HARRY:
Was bedeutet obwohl?

HELEN:
obwohl? Damit drückt man einen Widerspruch aus, weißt du?

NARRATOR:
Contradiction - that's an important word for you!

HARRY:
So, Pils is the Germans' favorite beer, although Helen doesn't like it at all.

NARRATOR:
Exactly

HARRY:
Und welches Bier magst du?

HELEN:
Ich mag eigentlich lieber Wein, wie du weißt.

HARRY:
And nevertheless you're going to drink a beer?

HELEN:
Ja, und trotzdem trinkeich jetzt Bier.

NARRATOR:
Just try to order wine in a Cologne pub - you won't try it a second time.

WAITER:
Hier, zwei Kölsch.

HELEN:
Danke! Prost, Harry!

HARRY:
Cheers! Ich trinke Kölsch, deshalb bin ich ein Mann aus Köln!

WAITER (DIALECT):
Du bist jetzt ein Kölner, ja, ja.

HELEN:
Na dann, auf unseren 'Kölner'!

NARRATOR:
The people of Köln are Kölner, the people of Berlin - Berliner, and the people of Hamburg - Hamburger...

HARRY:
Oh, enough of all that!

NARRATOR:
Harry … I can't believe it!

HARRY:
Man, this glass is really small.

NARRATOR:
That's just what I said!

WAITER:
Na, schmeckt's? Noch ein Kölsch?

HARRY:
Ich bin ein Kölner, deshalb trinke ich noch ein Kölsch!

WAITER:
Bitte schön, hier sind noch zwei Kölsch.

HARRY:
Prost! Together we'll stop the experiment. We'll do it.

HELEN:
Ja, du hast recht, Harry. Wir schaffen es!

NARRATOR:
Helen says you're right. At least she agrees with you!

HARRY:
Even though she originally had her doubts.

NARRATOR:
Obwohl sie zuerst gezweifelt hat.

HARRY:
I've got to go to the bathroom. Helen, wo ist das Bad?

HELEN:
Du meinst die Toilette? Das Klo?

HARRY:
Ja, ich muss aufs Klo! Das Kölsch …

HELEN:
Da hinten, an der Theke vorbei.

HARRY:
Alles klar, danke!

HARRY:
Ah, that's better. Hey! Where's Helen?

NARRATOR:
Good question! I don't know.

HARRY:
Entschuldigung?

WAITER:
Ja?

HARRY:
Haben Sie Helen … die Frau gesehen?

WAITER:
Ne, tut mir leid.

HARRY:
Mist! The train to Munich leaves in five minutes.

NARRATOR:
Her coat has gone. Perhaps she's already gone to the platform.

HARRY:
I don't believe it. That's strange. I'd better look for her.

ON THE PLATFORM

STATION ANNOUNCEMENT:
An Gleis acht steht für Sie bereit: der ICE 672 von Köln nach München. Planmäßige Abfahrt um 11:30 Uhr.

HARRY:
Helen? Helen! Helen!

NARRATOR:
Perhaps she's already got on.

HARRY:
Without me? No! Helen? Wo bist du?

NARRATOR:
Harry, you'd better get on the train. Think of the experiment!

STATION ANNOUNCEMENT:
An Gleis acht fährt ab: der ICE 672 von Köln nach München. Türen schließen selbsttätig. Vorsicht bei der Abfahrt.

HARRY:
Where is she? Where can she be? There can't be that many places she can go. Where can she be?

NARRATOR:
Make a decision, Harry! Entscheide dich!

HARRY:
I can't leave her alone. I can't do it.

NARRATOR:
Harry!

NARRATOR:
You surprise me. I wouldn't have expected such selflessness from you.

HARRY:
Perhaps something has happened to Helen. I've got to help her. Even if it's the last thing I do.

NARRATOR:
That's easy to say.
