Whether in a stadium or on a soccer pitch, the love of soccer unites many people in Germany. With around 24,000 soccer clubs and more than 7 million members, soccer is the number one sport in the country. Every weekend, a countless number of matches are held. Whether with or without a club, people of all genders are enthusiastic about soccer.

For a long time, soccer was considered a men's sport in Germany, and women's soccer had a very hard time establishing itself. At times, women in West Germany were even prohibited from playing soccer in clubs. It was not until 1970 that the German Football Association (DFB) lifted the ban on women's soccer. In 1982, the first German national women's soccer team was established. Since then, the women's national team has been world champion twice and European champion eight times. A women's national league started in Germany in 1991. More than 1 million women and girls now play soccer in German clubs. Germany's female soccer players are successful, and the sport is very popular among women today. Yet there is still a significant gap in earnings between men and women in soccer. Professional female soccer players often earn much less than male soccer players.
