Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Fit in Deutsch 1

Children and young people between the ages of 10 and 16 can demonstrate their German language skills with the Goethe-Zertifikat Fit in Deutsch 1. The exam is available globally.

Target group: Children and young people (recommended for ages 10 to 16)

Among other things, recognized in Germany as:

  • Evidence of A1 German language skills for children and young people

Fit in Deutsch 1 is also recognized in Austria and Switzerland as proof of A1 language skills.

Examination structure

Type of examination: 

  • Paper-based


Examination sections and duration: 

Written examination:

  • Listening (20 minutes)
  • Reading (20 minutes)
  • Writing (20 minutes)


Oral examination:

  • Speaking (15 minutes, in groups)


The written examination is administered without a break and is normally ordered: Listening, Reading, Writing. It is usually administered before the oral examination. 

The oral examination does not include preparation time.

To pass the examination:

  • At least 50 percent of the total possible points must be achieved.
  • All sections of the examination must be completed.


Receiving examination results in Germany:

  • Varies according to testing location
  • Between one day and two weeks 

Processing times vary around the world. Please inform yourself at the location where you intend to take the exam.

Certificate validity: unlimited

Retaking the examination:

  • You may retake the exam as many times as you like.
  • You must always retake the entire exam.
