Hotel owner Mr. Strobel greets Harry in the foyer with a "Guten Morgen!" This is a typical greeting in the morning in Germany. There are other ways of greeting people at other times of the day. Starting around 11:00 a.m., people say, "Guten Tag!" From around 6:00 p.m. on, people wish each other "Guten Abend!" When they part, people say "Auf Wiedersehen!" and later in the evening, you can wish someone "Gute Nacht!" before going to bed.

Nowadays, however, people often greet each other less formally - especially young people or people who know each other well. They often say "Hallo!" or "Hi!" when greeting each other. These greetings can be used at any time of day. When they part, most people say, "Tschüss!" Sometimes when people greet each other, they ask questions like, "Wie geht es Ihnen?" (formal) or "Wie geht es dir?" (informal).
