The modal verb sollen

The modal verb sollen can be used in a variety of ways.

1. You can prompt someone to do something or relay instructions from someone else using sollen.

Yara says to Mr Friese: Ich möchte nicht, dass Herr Murz die Mülltonne vor den Laden stellt.
Mr Friese says to Mr Murz: Herr Murz, Sie sollen die Mülltonne nicht vor den Laden stellen.

2. The modal verb sollen can be used to make an offer or a proposal.

Yara is frustrated that Mr Murz has put the trash cans in front of the store. Mr Friess asks: Soll ich die Mülltonne in die Garage stellen?
Or he can suggest another solution: Sollen wir beide zusammen mit Herrn Murz sprechen?

3. The verb sollen is also used when someone asks for advice.

Yara can ask Mr Friese: Soll ich mit Herrn Murz sprechen oder soll ich ihm einen Brief schreiben?

4. If you want to give someone advice, then you use the subjunctive form of sollen.

Mr Friese says: Sie sollten sich entspannen, Frau González.

Typically with this form of sollen, -te- is added onto the verb root. The forms of sollen in the subjunctive are the same as in the simple past:

To give advice, you commonly need the second-person singular, plural and the formal address.

Yara's friend Sarah said: Du solltest erst mal einen Kaffee trinken und Herrn Murz vergessen.
Inge advised Yara and Sarah: Ihr solltet heute Abend ins Theater gehen.
Mr Friese is of the opinion: Sie sollten das Stadtschloss besuchen.
