The conjunction als can be used to introduce a temporal subordinate clause. Temporal subordinate clauses with als describe an event or a condition in the past. We use them when we are talking about a single event or period of time in the past. As a rule, like in all subordinate clauses, the verb comes at the end of the sentence.
