Germany has an aging population and people are having fewer children. But the German population has been growing since 2012, due to immigration. The Federal Office of Statistics estimates the population at around 83 million.

Some 17 million residents – about 21 percent of the total population – have an immigrant background. The largest group of immigrants comes from Turkey.

Germany is a predominantly Christian country: Some 23 million people are Roman Catholic, and about 22 million are members of the Protestant Church. Yet for many people, the Christian religion is becoming less important in their daily lives. For this reason, and because you have to pay a Church tax in Germany, a lot of people have left the Church. Roughly 4.5 million people in Germany are Muslim and about 100,000 belong to the Jewish community.
