AT KÖLN TV / IN THE OPEN PLAN OFFICE

NARRATOR:
Harry has managed to get himself a job in Helen's weather show.

CHIEF EDITOR:
So. Hier ist Ihr neuer Arbeitsplatz, Herr Walkott.

NARRATOR:
Harry is being shown around his workplace by the chief editor of the station. At least, look as if you're interested.

HARRY:
Why should I be interested in my workplace? At the back there, siehst du? Behind the glass screen, in the studio, that's where Helen is. That's where I've got to go.

CHIEF EDITOR:
Ins Aufnahmestudio gehen wir später, Herr Walkott.

HARRY:
Ja, ja.

CHIEF EDITOR:
Zunächst müssen wir Ihren Arbeitsplatz einrichten.

NARRATOR:
You'll have to be patient a bit longer. First you've got to set up your desk with the chief editor.

CHIEF EDITOR:
Hier steht ja überhaupt nichts! So eine Schlamperei aber auch!

NARRATOR:
As you can see, there's absolutely nothing there, Harry. And the chief editor thinks that's sloppy. Eine Schlamperei.

CHIEF EDITOR:
Sie brauchen einen Computer, einen Bildschirm, eine Tastatur, eine Maus und einen
Drucker. Kommen Sie mit! In unserem Lager finden Sie alles, was Sie benötigen.

HARRY:
Where's he dragging me off to?

NARRATOR:
To the store - in das Lager

HARRY:
Okay, that’s where I get my computer. Is it der or das Computer?

NARRATOR:
der Computer und der Bildschirm - monitor

HARRY:
And I'll bet the mouse is called die Maus!

NARRATOR:
Exactly! And keyboard is die Tastatur, and what's still missing, you great computer expert?

HARRY:
The printer, my dear.

NARRATOR:
der Drucker! Right.

CHIEF EDITOR:
Hallo? Herr Walkott?

HARRY:
Ja, ja.

AT KÖLN TV / IN THE STORAGE ROOM

CHIEF EDITOR (DIALECT):
So, das ist unser Lager jetzt hier. Gucken Sie! Ja, kommen Sie ruhig rein, Herr Walkott, kommen Sie! Kommen Sie, kommen Sie, gucken Sie!

HARRY:
Ja, ja, ja.

CHIEF EDITOR (DIALECT):
Na, da haben Sie überall Computer jetzt hier, Regale voll, also, es ist alles für Sie da, was wir brauchen.

HARRY:
Okay, okay.

CHIEF EDITOR:
Hier …

HARRY:
Ja?

CHIEF EDITOR:
… ist der neue Computer und die Tastatur. Wollen Sie die graue oder die schwarze
Tastatur?

HARRY:
Ja.

CHIEF EDITOR:
Und hier der Bildschirm … und was noch? Ach ja, noch der Drucker und eine Maus.

HARRY:
Entschuldigung …

CHIEF EDITOR:
Ja?

HARRY:
…ich möchte … a notebook.

CHIEF EDITOR:
Welches Notebook?

HARRY:
Das klein Notebook.

CHIEF EDITOR:
Ah okay, das Notebook.

HARRY:
Und die Maus, schwarz.

NARRATOR:
Hang on, Harry! Small – klein – is an adjective, and adjectives have to match the noun in both gender and case. So: das kleine Notebook und die schwarze Maus.

CHIEF EDITOR:
So, das kleine Notebook ...

HARRY:
... und die schwarze Maus …

CHIEF EDITOR:
… und der schwarze Drucker. Hier, bitte eine Unterschrift!

HARRY:
Yes, I'll sign immediately. Harry the Great! On his way to Helen.

CHIEF EDITOR:
Die Techniker richten den Arbeitsplatz sofort ein, Herr Walkott.

NARRATOR:
Wow! What a service! The technicians will set up your desk immediately, Harry.

HARRY:
Grand. I thought I'd have to do that myself. Danke. Sehr freundlich. Ich möchte jetzt gerne mit Helen sprechen.

CHIEF EDITOR:
Kein Problem. Zwölf Uhr. Sie ist jetzt in der Kantine.

HARRY:
Where is Helen? In der Kantine?

CHIEF EDITOR (DIALECT):
Kommen Sie mit! Ich zeige Ihnen die Kantine.

AT KÖLN TV / IN THE CANTEEN

HARRY:
Hm, smells good here! It's making me quite hungry.

CHIEF EDITOR:
Hier in der Kantine können alle Mitarbeiter sehr preiswert essen.

NARRATOR:
As a member of staff, you can eat very reasonably in the canteen. Many big companies have such canteens in Germany.

CHIEF EDITOR:
Damit es schneller geht, ist hier Selbstbedienung.

HARRY:
Self-service, I understand. Aber wo ist …?

CHIEF EDITOR:
Jeden Tag gibt es drei warme Gerichte. Zwei Gerichte sind mit Fleisch, ein Gericht ist vegetarisch.

NARRATOR:
Every day there are three hot dishes: Two dishes are with meat, one is vegetarian
- vegetarisch: ohne Fleisch.

HARRY:
I don't have any time right now - time is money!

CHIEF EDITOR:
Sie haben recht, Zeit ist Geld!

HARRY:
Wo kann ich Helen finden?

CHIEF EDITOR:
Da, da drüben sitzt sie.

HARRY:
Danke, Herr Hansen!

CHIEF EDITOR:
Bis Morgen, Herr Walkott!

HARRY:
Ja, tschüss!

HARRY:
Entschuldigung, Sie sind Helen, Helen Meister!

HELEN:
Ja, ich bin Helen, und wer bist du?

HARRY:
Ich bin Harry Walkott. Mein Tag ist immer gleich.

HELEN:
Willkommen in der Zeitschleife.

HARRY:
My day has been repeating itself for weeks!

HELEN:
Seit Wochen? Mein Tag wiederholt sich seit Monaten.

HARRY:
Your day has been repeating itself for months? That's, that's …

NARRATOR:
… terrible - furchtbar?

HARRY:
Ja, das ist furchtbar.

HELEN:
Wieso? Warum? Ich finde den Tag immer wieder schön.

HARRY:
You find the day fine? Is this a joke? She is trying to make a fool of me.

HELEN:
Ehrlich, ich will dich nicht verarschen! Ich mache keine Witze!

HARRY:
Helen, you can't mean that seriously!

HELEN:
Doch, das ist mein Ernst. Mein voller Ernst. Für mich ist die Zeitschleife die große Chance.

NARRATOR:
The time warp is the great chance for her? Well, whoever knows what she means.

HARRY:
Helen, das verstehe ich nicht. Das kann ich nicht verstehen!

HELEN:
Ich bin gern in der Zeitschleife, weil ich so den perfekten Wetterbericht machen kann.

NARRATOR:
She wants to make the perfect weather forecast in the time warp? What was that again ... Helen ist verrückt! Das Ende ist nah!

HARRY:
For a change we both have the same opinion on this issue.

NARRATOR:
Oh my!

HARRY:
Helen, you like the time warp? Du magst die Zeitschleife? Du willst nicht weg?

HELEN:
Nein, tut mir leid. Aber du kannst mich jederzeit besuchen. Oder anrufen. Hier. Ich gebe dir meine Handynummer.

HARRY:
Danke.

NARRATOR:
Look on the positive side, Harry. You've now got Helen's mobile number and you can chat about your problem with her at any time.

HARRY:
I don't want to chat about my problem. Ich will hier raus!
