Women's rights in Germany

Harry thinks Dr. Wohlfahrt and her friend have used their supernatural powers to influence his girlfriend, Julia. Harry's thoughts look a lot like some medieval notions. This is because in the period from the end of the 15th century to the beginning of the 18th century - in Europe and in Germany - people were blamed for natural disasters, illnesses, deaths and much more. They were accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake. Eighty percent of those tried were female, including midwives and many women skilled in healing. They were forced to confess under torture.

The Age of Enlightenment ended this dark period, during which women, in particular, had suffered. However, some time passed before German society granted women more rights. Women's right to vote, for example, was not legalized in Germany until 1918 and only came into force in 1919. The equality of women and men under the law was not approved until 1957. The legal division of tasks in marriage, in which women were responsible for raising children and running the household, was not abolished until 1977.
