ÖSD Zertifikat A2

This exam was created by the Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch (ÖSD) for level A2 learners 14 years and older. This certificate proves basic languages proficiency at the A2 level. It is internationally recognized.

General Information

Level: A2

Target group: Individuals (recommended for ages 14 and up)

Children over 10 can take the ÖSD KID A2 exam.

Among other things, recognized in Austria:

  • For admission to certain vocational training courses
  • For certain professions (for example, to work in food service)
  • To prepare for a degree at certain universities
  • For a Red-White-Red Card for very highly qualified workers (10 points for A2 knowledge)
  • For a Red-White-Red Card for skilled workers in shortage occupations (10 points for A2 knowledge)
  • For a Red-White-Red Card for other key workers in a company (10 points for A2 knowledge)
  • For a Red-White-Red Card for start-up founders (5 points for A2 knowledge)

Among other things, recognized in Germany as proof of language proficiency:  

  • To apply for a (temporary) residence permit, to participate in certain measures related to employment qualification and for the subsequent recognition of foreign professional credentials
  • To apply for a work permit during these qualification measures under certain conditions
  • To apply for a (permanent) residence permit for people entitled to asylum and refugees after five years of residence under certain conditions
  • To apply for an opportunity card ("Chancenkarte") for job searching (1 point for A2 language skills)

You can find information at the  Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF): general information on migration and residency in Germany, among other places, on whether A2 language skills suffice in your case when applying for a residence, settlement or work permit.

The ÖSD Zertifikat A2 is also recognized as proof of A2-level knowledge in Switzerland.  Check with relevant officials there for more information.

Examination structure

Type of examination:

  • Paper-based / digital (depending on test center)
     

Examination sections and duration:  

Written module:

  • Reading (30 minutes)
  • Listening (15 minutes)
  • Writing (30 minutes)


Oral module:

  • Speaking (10 minutes, in pairs or individually)

It is possible to take the written and oral exams together or separately. If both parts of the exam are taken together, the written exam usually takes place before the oral exam.

In the written exam, it’s possible to take a break after the “Listening” section.

The oral examination includes 10 minutes to prepare.

Information about examination results

To pass the examination:

  • You must receive a score of at least 50 percent for the written exam and the minimal requirements for each of the sections Reading, Listening and Writing (Reading: at least 5 out of 25 points, Listening: at least 6 out of 30 Writing: 3 out of 15 points)
  • You must also receive a score of at least 50 percent on the oral exam

If you initially pass only one part of the exam (the written or oral exam), you will receive what’s known as a “module certificate.” If you then go on to successfully complete another part of the test within the same calendar year at the same test location, you will receive the completed certificate.

  • Generally, within three weeks

Processing times vary around the world. Please inquire at the location where you intend to take the exam.

Certificate validity: unlimited  

If you took the examination a few years ago, we recommend inquiring with the authority or institution where you intend to submit your examination results. Older certificates might not be accepted.

Retaking the examination:

  • You may retake the examination as many times as you like.
  • You may retake the written and oral exams independently of each other.
  • The written exam, which includes Reading, Listening and Writing, must always be taken in its entirety. It is not possible to repeat single subsections.
