Harry is heartbroken, and the nice janitor offers him a coffee as a small consolation. Coffee, along with beer, is Germans' favorite beverage. Although tea is occasionally drunk, most people in Germany prefer coffee – and not just for breakfast. Each year, nearly 150,170 liters of the black, dark beverage are consumed per person, or about three liters per week, and the trend is rising. It's no surprise that every bakery, kiosk, and pub now offers a wide range of coffee specialties.

Bremen, a Hanseatic city, is a major coffee center. A delicious aroma wafts through the streets as the imported coffee beans are roasted. The world's largest freeze-drying plant for coffee is located in the city's Hemelingen district. Instant coffee, also known as soluble coffee, is produced here around the clock, 365 days a year. The equivalent of 24 million cups of instant coffee is produced daily! The lion's share of production is exported to other countries, for instance, Russia, Ukraine, or Dubai. But it doesn't matter because Germans still prefer good old-fashioned filter coffee!
