Relative clause: relative pronouns as the dative object

A relative pronoun can be in the dative when it is the dative object of a relative clause.

Nico trifft Pepe. Die Krimiserie gefällt ihm (= Pepe) gut.
Nico trifft Pepe, dem die Krimiserie gut gefällt.

Nico trifft Selma. Er hat ihr (= Selma) ein Fahrrad geschenkt.
Nico trifft Selma, der er ein Fahrrad geschenkt hat.

In the dative singular, the relative pronouns der, die and das take the same form as the definite articles: dem and der. In the plural we make the relative pronoun from the definite article den + en: denen.

Nico trifft Max und Tarek. Er hilft ihnen (= Max und Tarek) im Restaurant.
Nico trifft Max und Tarek, denen er im Restaurant hilft.
