Relative clauses: relative pronouns after dative prepositions

If a relative pronoun has to be connected to the verb with a preposition, the preposition in the relative clause comes directly before the relative pronoun. The case of the relative pronoun corresponds to the preposition: If the relative pronoun follows a preposition that takes the dative, it also takes the dative.

Pepe ist Nicos Bruder. Er hatte mit ihm (= dem Bruder) schon oft Streit.
Pepe ist Nicos Bruder, mit dem er schon oft Streit hatte.

Pepe hat Bekannte. Nico kann bei ihnen (= den Bekannten) ein Praktikum machen.
Pepe hat Bekannte, bei denen Nico ein Praktikum machen kann.
