Two-case prepositions with the dative

The nine two-case prepositions - in, an, unter, über, auf, vor, hinter, neben and zwischen take the dative when they answer the question Wo ...?

Wo sitzt Ibrahim?
Ibrahim sitzt auf dem Sofa.

Selma and her family have set up their new apartment:

Das Sofa steht im Wohnzimmer. (im = in + dem)
Ein großes Bild hängt an der Wand.
Das Sofa steht unter dem Bild.
Das Bild hängt über dem Sofa.
Eine kleine Pflanze steht auf dem Tisch.
Ein kleiner Tisch steht vor dem Sofa.
Die kleine Lampe steht hinter einer großen Pflanze.
Die Lampe steht neben dem Sofa.
Die Pflanze steht zwischen der Tür und dem Sofa.

Contractions

Some prepositions are abbreviated when combined with an article, as in the following:

in + dem = im
an + dem = am

Sometimes you will hear other shortened versions of prepositions + articles, but they are not always used.

Verbs describing a position

The verbs liegen, stehen and sitzen describe a spatial area and nearly always require further explanation to answer the question Wo ...? This is why these verbs are often used with a two-case preposition that takes the dative.
