In addition to beer, people in Germany also like to drink wine. But not nearly as much as their "national beverage." In Germany, 20 liters of wine per capita per year are consumed on average. There are 140 varieties of grapes grown in Germany. The most widely planted types are Spätburgunder for red wines and Riesling for white wines. More Riesling grapes are grown in Germany than anywhere else in the world. About 20% of the country's vineyards are used to cultivate Riesling, which produces the most prize-winning wines. Many Germans do not know that the country's northernmost wine-growing region lies in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It covers an area of just under four hectares.

Harry might prefer the taste of one of the local specialties, like ice wine or a Trockenbeerenauslese. Grapes for ice wine are harvested and pressed in the winter in below-freezing temperatures. The result is a very sweet, concentrated wine. For the Trockenbeerenauslese, the grapes are not harvested until they are seen as "berries," shriveled and dried out practically to the point of being raisins. They are hand-picked and produce a very aromatic wine that can age up to 100 years and still taste delicious. A superb choice for someone stuck in a time warp!
