In Germany, there are two main telephone numbers to call in case of an emergency - 110 and 112. Dialing 110 connects you to the police. That's the right number to call if you are in danger or there has been an accident. If emergency medical services are required, the police department will forward the information. The number 112 is an emergency number that works in all countries of the European Union. In Germany, it connects you to the fire department and emergency services.

Emergency calls can be made free of charge. You don't need to insert coins or use a calling card when using a public phone.  The emergency call is also free of charge from a cell phone. However, a valid SIM card must be in place and working. The person answering the emergency call will ask five specific questions: the "5 WH questions."

Where did it happen? (Wo)
What happened? (Was)
How many people are involved? (Wie viele)
What kind of illness or injury is it? (Welche)
Wait for more questions! (Warten)
